October 10, 2012 — Shannon Sider’s reburial next Monday afternoon

I got a call today from Bob Siders about Shannon’s reburial.  Here’s the release inviting members of the media and the general public:

NEWAYGO—The body of Shannon Marie Siders will be reburied at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at her gravesite in the Newaygo City Cemetery.  Shannon Siders was abducted in the early morning hours of July 18, 1989, and murdered.   The date of her reburial is the 23rd anniversary of the discovery of her body in a nearby federal forest.  Investigators described the brutal assault as a sexual homicide.

A cold case team has been actively investigating the case for the past 10 months.   The team is led by Michigan State Police D/Sgt. Scott Rios.  He is joined by Newaygo Chief of Police Pat Hedlund, D/Sgt. Adam Mercer of the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department, and D/Sgt. John Forner and D/Trooper Mike Stephens, both of the Michigan State Police.

At her exhumation July 26th, investigators said that her remains might be useful in the search for her murderer or murderers; her body was going to be studied by forensic pathologist Newaygo County Medical Examiner Dr. Brian Hunter and Michigan State University forensic anthropologist Dr. Norm Sauer.  They have concluded their examination and Shannon’s body was transported back to Newaygo this week.

At the time of her exhumation news crews and other onlookers where kept at a distance.  At her reburial news media will be allowed to come much closer, said Shannon’s father, Robert Siders.

“We feel a great gratitude for all that the media have done to help in this case.  They really need to be invited and they are welcome to come,” Siders said.  “I know it’s an old story but it’s an unfinished story.  And every time they come we get new leads.”

Community members also are welcome to attend, said Siders.
